This article will also help to all those mothers who want to do makeup for her girl or who want to buy makeup for girl child. This article is going to be one of the longest articles, so I have divided it into four parts. So please read the full article till the end.

SKINCARE ROUTINE:

Step 1: Cleansing

So before moving on to the process of how to do makeup for beginners, you must need to understand the importance of your skincare routine. You need to cleanse your face and neck daily to have clear and radiant skin. Firstly, wash your face with mild soap or face wash and then scrub your face. For this, you need to exfoliate your skin around 2-3 times per week. Don’t forget to scrub your lips as well. Take a small amount of facial scrub and apply it all over the face and neck. Now gently scrub your face in a small circular motion for 2-3 minutes and then wash it off with normal water. This will help you to get rid of those dead skin cells and leaves your skin super soft and smooth. It will give you a natural glow also. You should use mild face wash and gentle exfoliator (face scrub) for your skin. Since you are a beginner, I would recommend you not to introduce harsh products that have a chemical peeling solution like AHA and BHA for your delicate skin. You also need to avoid those products which are loaded with lots of chemicals. This tip is really important for teenagers because they have very sensitive skin due to continuous hormonal changes. It’s a big no for you at this stage. Choose mild skincare products as per your skin’s requirements, for example, if you have dry skin choose products which are meant for dry skin only, if you have oily, acne-prone or combination skin then choose those products which are perfect for your skin type. If you wish you can double cleanse your face with the help of micellar water. Dab a small amount of micellar water on a cotton pad and wipe your face and neck. This will remove all the dirt and germs if there any.

Step 2: Apply toner

After washing your face with mild soap/facewash, you need to apply toner. This is because your pores have become large and open after cleansing, so you need to minimize them with toner. Take a toner of your choice on a cotton ball and gentle press it well all over the face. Applying toner is necessary because it will not only close your pores but also helps to clean extra dirt and oil from the pores. It also helps to restore the skin’s pH balance. Always choose toner on the bases of your skin type. Toner also helps in preparing your skin for moisturization. After applying toner, let your skin air dry for a minimum of 5 minutes and then move on to the next step. Avoid using toners which has alcohol in it. As a teenager, you have very delicate skin so it’s better to avoid alcohol-based toners or products.

Step 3: Apply moisturizer

After cleansing and toning your face, the next and most important step is to apply moisturizer on the face. I think it doesn’t matter if you have oily, dry, or combination skin, everyone needs to apply moisturizer well. This step is not only for makeup routine, but this is equally important for your skincare routine too. Always choose a moisturizer with a minimum SPF 30 or more. It will help your skin to protect from UV rays throughout the day. Everyone needs to keep their skin hydrated. It doesn’t matter if you have oily skin, you have to keep your skin hydrated so that you can have soft and healthy skin. Choose your moisturizer which is well suited for your particular skin type. Apply it all over your face and neck. Especially don’t forget to apply it around your eyes and lips. Just make sure your moisturizer should not make your skin look oily or greasy. Now, wait for 5- 10 minutes till your skin absorbs the moisturizer completely. After moisturizing, if you wish to give extra protection to your skin, you can apply separate sunscreen lotion or cream (based on your skin type) but wait for 10 minutes to be soaked by the skin before applying your makeup.

These steps are useful for a day-time skincare routine and just before applying your makeup in the day-time. I will surely write a separate article on the night-time skincare routine for beginners.

MAKEUP ROUTINE:

Once your moisturizer completely shrinks into the skin, you are ready for applying the foundation on the face. Choosing the right makeup for your skin type is a very essential step. Always respect your skin and treat it by using quality makeup products. This doesn’t mean you always have to buy high-end makeup products. There are so many good quality drugstore brands available in the market. I would recommend using organic or natural makeup products that contain mineral powder and natural ingredients. They also work best like any other makeup products available in the market. They do not contain any harsh chemicals, colors, and fragrances (which gives you irritations, allergies, and breakouts). Always use products that won’t clog your pores and keeps your skin hydrated. You can choose natural products from many mineral cosmetics available out there. If possible, give first preference to those products which has SPF in it so that it can protect your skin against sun damage. Always ask for fresh/new sample or trial pack if any available so that you can come to know whether the product is suitable for you or not.

HOW TO DO MAKEUP FOR TEENAGE GIRL OR BEGINNER:

How to do eye makeup for a beginner:

Eye makeup is an art and tricky too, which changes your entire makeup look. Understanding the right color of an eye shadow and how to apply it, will make your look fabulous. By practicing, you can master in eye-makeup like a pro. Trust me, you start with small and practice until you blend it like your favorite YouTuber.  A beginner’s kit should include an eyeshadow palette with few basic shades and right eye makeup brushes. It’s a personal preference to start your entire makeup with eyes or face.  Eye shadows are available in various forms, choose your eye shadow based on your skin type and complexion. If you have lighter or fair skin, than go for a slightly darker shade for the base color to pop the colors on eyes, and if you are having darker skin than going for a slightly lighter color than your skin for your eye makeup base. I would suggest you start your makeup with eyes first because while applying eye shadow. If there is any fall out then you can clean it with a clean fluffy brush without wondering if your face makeup will spoil or not. Also doing your eye makeup first will give you a clear frame for face makeup.  As a beginner, you should try to play with neutral colors for a natural makeup look. For a more dramatic look, you can try out a smokey eye look. For a night out, smokey eye makeup is good for a beginner.

Step 1: Start with applying moisturizer on the face including your under eyes and below brow area.

Step 2: After applying moisturizer, apply primer on your eyelids and around your eyes (including your brow area). Eye primer creates a smooth surface for your eye makeup. Use those primers which are specifically meant for eyes and if you don’t want to invest in eye primer or run out of eye primer then you can apply your face primer to your eyes also. Let it completely dry.

Step 3: After applying eye primer, apply an eye shadow base for eye makeup. You can use your foundation or concealer as a base. I would suggest you, if you are using powder eye shadows then use a cream-based base for your eyes so that you can keep your eye shadows in place for a longer time and there will be no fallout. Apply a sheer layer of your foundation or concealer on under eye area and around your eyes including your brow area for eye makeup base.

Step 4: Start with your brows. Brow products are available in different forms. Choose your desire brow product which matches your brow color or slightly lighter than your brow color. Too dark brow products will give you an unnatural look. If you want your brows to look natural than use a small amount of brow product. For sharp or well-defined eyebrows, apply some dot of concealer just under the eyebrow line and above the eyebrow line. It will give you a clear framework for your brows. Beginners should include small brow kit for the eyebrow makeup. For brow makeup, you will need a spoolie brush, eyebrow kit, and an angled brush and an eyebrow pencil.

How to do eyebrow makeup for a beginner:

Step 1:  First you need to find out your actual brow shape. For this, place a brush along the side of your nose to find out where your brows will ideally start. To find where your eyebrows will naturally end, put brush outside of your nose to the outer corner of your eyes.

Step 2: To find out whether your hair is the uneven or actual shape of your brows, comb your brow hairs up with the help of a clean spoolie brush.

Step 3: You can use an eyebrow pencil or angled brush and use small strokes to fill in your brows.  To achieve the evenest brows, avoid overly fill in the inside corners of your brows and don’t make the endpoints of brows too harsh.

Step 4: Again, comb your hair with a spoolie brush to blend out the color evenly and soften any harsh lines. To set your brows hair and keep it in place, comb the hair with tinted or colored brow gel. Choose that color which completely matches your natural eyebrow hair color.

Step 5: Now take a small fluffy brush, dip it into translucent powder and clean the area around the brows for the clear and sharp shape of the brows.

Perfectly defined brows help to frame your entire face and bring out your eyes with or without makeup.

How to apply eye shadow makeup for beginner:

After eyebrow makeup, it’s time to apply eye shadow makeup. For this, you will need some basic eye shadows and a few brushes.

Step 1: As a beginner, you want to create an everyday natural look. For this, start with 4 basic shades. You will need highlighter shade -which is lighter than your skin tone, a mid-tone which will add a pop of color to your eyes, a contouring shade that is darker than your skin tone and a black shade which will add definition to your eye makeup look. These 4 shades are best to try your hand on eye makeup. It is best to use matte eye shadow for the longevity of your eye makeup. You can use your facial highlighter and contour shade too for your eye makeup look.

Step 2: It’s important to choose the right makeup brushes for your eyes because eye brushes are different from face makeup brushes. But some beauty experts use their fingers to do the eye makeup too. But as a beginner, I would suggest you invest in some good quality eye makeup brushes. You will need one small and medium-sized blending brush to smoothly blend out the eye shadows, one small-sized eye shadow brush for precise and easier application, to create the seamless smokey effect, you will need a smudger brush.

Step 3: The starting point of applying eye shadow is the inner corners of your eyes. Take a small eye shadow brush and sweep it on the lightest shade. Gently tap off the excess product against your hand or palette before applying it. Apply it all over the eyelids. Starting from the inner corner of your eyes and stretching it outwards.  Sweep the brush back and forth all over your eyelid. Slightly fade the color higher towards the crease. When you are done with applying eye shadow, you can apply the same eye shadow color on just under the arch of your eyebrows and inner corner of the eyes to highlight them.

Pro-tip: You can dampen your brush with your setting spray or take a small bowl filled with some water and dip your brush’s tip to dampen it enough. Now sweep this brush on the eye shadow and you will be amazed at how pigmented it is!

Step 4: Now apply mid-tone shade just above the crease line with the help of a blending brush. Blending it gently from outer corners to inner corners. Apply it in outward-inward motion and blend it for a good few times. Don’t overdo it. The key to good eye makeup is the right blending. Take your time to blend out well. You can choose any color as a mid-tone from a neutral eye shadow kit that suits well with your skin and outfit. After practicing with neutral shades, you can play with more colors like peach, pink, or light orange. When you start blending out like a pro, you can play with more funky colors or any colors.

Pro-tip: Above we have found out how to find your brow shape, the same method is applicable to know that if you have overdone with eyeshadow or not.

Step 5: Next step is contouring the eyes. Put darker shade into crease. Don’t blend too high. Blend the darker shade into the crease on the outer half of the eyes. Start with the outer corner of your eyes and glide it towards the crease. Make sure you apply your contour shade below the mid-tone shade.  Do the same process for another eye. Focus on one eye at a time. When you are doing your second eye, try to match that with first eye makeup close as much as possible. And at the end match your both eye look, if there are any changes needed then make it. If the eyeshadow doesn’t match on both eyes then use your finger or take your brush or cotton swab to wipe away excess eye shadow. It will give you a more natural look.

Pro-tip: If you have hooded eyes then try to apply darker shade just above the crease to create an illusion so that your upper lids are more visible.

Step 6: Once your eyelid makeup is done, you can now jump to the bottom part of the eye makeup i.e. lower or bottom lash lines. Take a small amount of both mid-tone and a darker shade on the brush and apply it from the outer corner of the lower lash line until it meets the highlighter shade.

Step 7: For a more dramatic look try a simple smokey eye makeup look.  Sweep a dark black shadow on all over the eyelids, going from lashes to crease. The brush for this look is very important. Use the dense brush for the more pigmented look and for more natural and subtle color go for a softer brush.  And now take a mid-tone shade on the brush and apply it on your crease, apply it from the inner corner of your eyes to the outer edges of your eyes. Sweep the brush back and forth. This will help to get rid of any harsh lines and give even color look.

Step 8: Sweep the lightest shade on just below the brow line or arch of your brows and inner corner of your eyes. (as I mentioned above that lightest shade can be applied to both of this part to highlight them.) you can use a shade with a little bit of shimmer in it instead of matte one to give a nice shine to these areas. Applying highlighter on the inner corner of your eyes will make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

Step 9: Now the last step of the eyeshadow application is to blend it out with a clean brush or cotton swab if you would like to. You can use your fingers too. Blend the eye shadow up and out. Always use the brush gently up toward above your crease and out to the corner of your eyes to give your eyes ‘a lifting effect’.

Step 10: Apply eyeliner for a more dramatic look. If you choose to wear a smokey eye look, you can apply eyeliner for a more dramatic look. Eyeliners are available in various forms and colors. whether you choose to apply liquid, pencil or pen liner, gel or powder eyeliner, carefully apply liner in a thin line close to your upper lash line and stop on 2/3 of the way from the inner corner of your eyes. You can choose to apply liner thick or thin, it totally depends on your preferences and the look which you want to create.

How to apply eyeliner for beginner:

Pencil eyeliner is best for a natural or smudged eye look. Liquid eyeliners are best to create a precise look and smooth lines. It is very easy to use if liquid eyeliner is available in the form of a marker pen. If you want to draw dramatic liners than go for gel eyeliners.

How to apply liquid liner:

First, shake well the tube for a few seconds, before applying it. Now unscrew the cap and pull the brush out of the tube. If you see there is a lot of product on liner brush then wipe it across the edges of the liner tube. Now put the brush as close as possible against your upper lash line. Now applying liner in the middle of your upper lash line and move out towards the outer corner of your upper lash line. After lining the outer corner, line the inner corner of your upper lash line and connect it with the outer corner line so that you can have even lines.

Pro-tip: If you make mistake take some cotton swab and dip it into some liquid oil. You can even out or fix the liner or wipe away excess products by using the tip of the cotton swab. As a beginner, I would recommend you first use a pencil liner to draw a line on the upper lash line and then go over on this line with liquid liner for even line.

If you want to create a slightly winged eyeliner look than use tape and place it on the outer corner of the lower lash line so that it is at an angle. The tape should be right up against your outer corner of the lower lash line. And extending up towards your eyebrow. For even the application of liner, tape both sides. You can tilt the tape as per your desire. The more tilt tape will give you a more dramatic look. if you want a less dramatic look than reduce the size of tilt in your tape.

How to apply pencil liner:

You can use a pencil eyeliner in sharpen or dull form. Sharpen pencil will give you a precise line and a dull pencil tip will give you a thick line. Always use a pencil liner sharpener to sharpen it. To dull the tip of the pencil, gently rub it on tissue paper until your desired level of dullness. If you want a smooth application of pencil liner, you might need to warm it up. It will also remove the feel of hardness in the liner. If it feels soft, you might want to cool it down. A warm pencil will provide a darker and more pigmented look and a cooler pencil will provide light and softer application. Use your hair dryer on its highest setting and blow the air towards your liner for a few seconds. This will soften up the liner to give you gel-like consistency. If you want to prevent your liner from crumbling and want to cool down the liner then place the liner in the freezer for 10 minutes before applying it.

Raise the outer corner of your eyebrow with the help of your hand. Put your fingers on the outer corner of your eyebrow and gently stretch it upwards so that your eyelids couldn’t block your lash lines. Now draw a line on the upper lash line from the inner corner of your eyes and move towards the outer corner of your upper lash line. Go slowly and use small strokes to create an even line. As a beginner I would suggest you, create a tight line for a more natural look. you can use a light brown color for a more natural look. To create a tight line to your eyes, apply liner only spaces between your lashes on the upper lids. Also, don’t forget to apply liner on your lower lash line. Apply just outer half of the lower lash line for a more subtle look. For a dramatic look, you can apply liner on the entire lower line. For this, you need to put a finger on the outer corner of your lower lid and slightly pull it downwards. You can apply a light brown color for a less dramatic look.

How to apply gel liner:

Gel liners usually come in a small pot with a brush. Unscrew the pot and dip the liner brush’s tip on the gel liner pot. Gel liners tend to dry out quickly so warm it up by rubbing the pot between your palms for more easier use. Start applying liner from the inner corner of your upper lash line towards the center and now apply it from the outer corner of the eyelash towards the center of your lids. Now fill in the gap along the center of your lash line. Use small strokes to create even lines. For more pigmentation, you may need to go over it several times.

Pro-tip: If you want to create an even line, create several dots along your upper lash line, and then connect them.

Step 11: To define your lashes, apply mascara. Mascaras are available in two types i.e. water-proof and non-waterproof. If you want your lashes to look defined throughout the day, then go for waterproof mascara. Keep in mind that waterproof mascaras take more time to be removed than the normal one. Also, waterproof mascaras don’t smudge or transfer easily. Mascaras are available for different concerns like “to lengthen? Or to volumize?”  There are so many options available in the market to choose from. Mascaras are also available in various colors. Choose those mascara which suits you well. The best option is to choose black color mascara. If you want a more natural look and don’t want the color on your lashes than you can apply clear or transparent mascara which serves the same purpose without giving your lashes color.

How to apply mascara for beginner:

Mascara is a must and the last step of any eye makeup look. Mascaras make your natural lashes look fuller. Different mascaras come with different wands that give your lashes different looks. For this, you will need a lash curler, lash comb, lash primer, and mascara.

Step 1: Before applying mascara, curl your lashes to lift and lengthen your lashes. Use a good quality eyelash curler. Place a half-round part of the curler at the base of the upper lash line and close the curler and hold it in a place for 10 seconds. Be careful while curling your lashes.

Step 2: Apply eyelash primer for better-staying power. Apply one or two coats of primer on the upper and lower lashes and wait for 30 seconds before applying mascara. You can use another clean wand with small bristles for your lower lashes. Primer helps to thicken and separate the lashes for the perfect application of mascara.

Step 3: Take a mascara tube and dip the mascara wand into the tube to coat the bristles of mascara properly. Don’t repeat this again and again otherwise air will go inside the tube and mascara will look clumpy. The air inside the mascara tube will dry out the product faster.

Step 4: Coat your lashes properly.  Twist the wand out of the mascara tube and wipe off the excess product on the edges of the tube. This will help you avoid clumpy and too heavy lashes. Look up and open your eyes wide, starting from the root of your upper lashes; apply the mascara with the wriggling motion. It will give you more volume at the roots.  Now apply mascara with less product on it at the lower lash line because it is a very delicate area with smaller hairs than the upper lashes. You can use a separate clean wand with small bristles for your lower lashes.

Step 5: If your lashes are sticking together or have clumps of mascara on them than you can comb them out with the help of a clean lash comb.

Step 6: Once your first coat of mascara dries out, you can apply the second coat of mascara for more volume if you wish to add.

Step 7: If you are not satisfied with the volume which mascara gives you then again use your lash curler for added curling. Use lash curler after few minutes of mascara application. This step is optional.

AHA and BHA: Chemical exfoliants

In this post, you will learn about chemical exfoliations i.e. AHA and BHA. As we know, for healthy and glowing skin physical or manual exfoliation is a must. When we were younger our skin was naturally able to exfoliate dead skin cells every day but over time, because of aging, hormonal imbalance, genetics, and unprotected sun exposer, this process slows down or may stop altogether. As a result, we experience several skin issues such as dull, flaky, dry skin, clogged or enlarged pores, wrinkles, acne, loss of glow and firmness, inflammation, hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone.

There are two ways of exfoliating your skin: physical exfoliants and chemical exfoliants.

PHYSICAL EXFOLIATION AND CHEMICAL EXFOLIATION(AHA and BHA):

Physical exfoliation:

Physical or manual exfoliation is the traditional/classic way of exfoliating your skin with the help of a facial brush, body brush, and facial or body scrub. Facial scrub contains small particles that remove the top layer of dead skin cells and leave skin soft and clean. Results from this way of exfoliation are immediate but remember that they can remove dead skin cells only from the surface. Most brands contain microbeads made of small plastic particles for making scrubs. Though some brands use natural particles of almonds, sugar, and walnuts. But these particles can be harsh or irritating for our gentle skin of the face. They can give invisible cuts to the skin surface.

Chemical exfoliation:

Chemical exfoliation is an alternative to physical exfoliation. This is a very new and trending skin care method to speed up the natural process of exfoliating dead skin cells. This is a very effective way of removing dull and dead skin so that we can have healthy, glowing skin.  To reduce any skin imperfections, the chemical exfoliation process is a must. Unlike facial scrubs, chemical exfoliants work on weakening the bond that holds the upper layer of the skin.

There are mainly two categories of chemical exfoliants:

  1.  Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
  2.  Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs)

These are gentle exfoliants. These can be found in skincare products such as cleansers, toners, masks, wash-off peels, serums, facial oil, and even in moisturizers. Both can be used to break the bond which holds the dull and damaged skin cells on the surface.

Similarities between AHA and BHA:

  1.  Reduce the appearance of large pores, wrinkles, and fine lines
  2.  Decrease inflammation, blemishes, melasma, and other skin concerns
  3.  Improves skin texture, dull and uneven skin tone
  4.  Promotes new skin cells and makes skin healthier, firmer and younger
  5.  Helps in hyperpigmentation, sun damage and acne scars
  6.  Unclog the pores to reduce acne
  7.  Smoothen out the skin texture and gives a nice glow

But each has some unique properties too, so that person can use it according to their skin type and skin concern.

Difference between AHA and BHA:

ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS(AHAs):

AHAs are water-soluble acids. Most AHAs are naturally derived from sugary fruits such as grapes and sugar cane. It’s also derived from milk. They work by breaking the bond that holds the skin’s surface. Generally, AHAs are recommended for normal to dry, sun-damaged skin because of their ability to naturally increase the moisture within the skin. They help to remove the surface of the skin to promote new, even and healthy skin cells. They are great for rejuvenating the skin and reducing the signs of sun damage and wrinkles.

Different types of AHA:

Glycolic acid:

Glycolic acid is the most popular AHA used in skincare products. It’s naturally derived from sugarcane plants. It is one of the AHAs which gives significant exfoliation with its smallest molecules to prevent a lot of skin problems. It also has antimicrobial properties to prevent acne breakouts.

Lactic acid:

Lactic acid is the most common AHA found in skincare products. Other AHAs made from fruit but lactic acid is derived from lactose found in milk. It’s one of the mildest AHA to treat skin aging, fine lines, wrinkles, reduce enlarged pores, and hyperpigmentation.

Tartaric acid:

Tartaric acid is one of the AHAs which is not widely popular. This acid is mainly found in most wines. It is derived from fruits like grapes. It is an excellent antioxidant to heal sun-damaged and acne-prone skin.

Citric acid:

As the name suggests, citric acid is made from citrus fruit extracts like lemon and lime. This AHA can be found in serums or toners to neutralize the skin’s pH level and to smooth the skin’s texture. It also helps to give you maximum UV protection.

Malic acid:

Malic acid is both AHA and BHA type. It is derived from apple. Though it is not much effective as a solo ingredient compared to other AHAs, it works effectively with the combination of other acids. Therefore, malic acid is common in combination with AHA products.

Mandelic acid:

Mandelic acid has the largest molecule compared to other AHAs. It is derived from almond nut extracts. It can be combined with other acids for maximum exfoliation. It can also be used alone to improve the skin’s overall texture, pore size, and pigmentation.

BETA HYDROXY ACIDS(BHAs):

BHAs are oil-soluble acids. BHAs work on both skin’s surface and deep inside the pores. It’s mostly preferred to normal to oily, acne-prone, blemish, sensitive and clogged pores. It has a natural skin-calming property. BHA goes deeper into the skin and removes excess oil to unclog the pore. It also has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammation properties to keep skin blemish-free.

Different types of BHA:

Salicylic acid:

Salicylic acid is the most popular BHAs found in skincare products. It is naturally derived from the bark of the willow tree. Depending on the product at hand, concentration can range between 0.5 and 5 %.  It is well known as an acne treatment. It improves overall skin texture, while its deeper penetration action effectively reduces whiteheads, blackheads, acne, and inflammation. Salicylic acid has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties to calm down the general redness and keep skin acne-free.

Citric acid:

Although citric acid is primarily considered as one of the types of AHA, some formulations are considered as a BHA too. This type of citric acid is primarily used for drying out excess oil in the skin and removes dead skin cells from deeper inside the pores.

Tips to use AHA and BHA:

If you are a beginner, then slowly introduce chemical exfoliants to your skin, it will reduce the chances of experiencing negative side effects such as skin irritation and redness. While using AHA products you must need to apply sunscreen with high SPF all the time, because of AHA likely to increase your skin sensitivity to the sun. Try to apply BHA products a few times a week to see how your skin is reacting to new chemical exfoliants. If you don’t experience any skin irritations and redness, then try to slowly increase the usage of BHA products. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is not advisable to use chemical exfoliants. If you have sensitive skin, then BHAs product with lower concentration can help to calm down your skin. Even if BHA won’t give you skin sensitivity to sun-like AHA, you need to apply sunscreen every day to avoid skin damage and signs of aging. BHA has a property to dry out your skin. So, it is important to apply moisturizer well after using BHA products.

Tips on combining AHA and BHA products:

You can use both AHA and BHA together on your skin, but you also need to consider some important factors like your skin’s sensitivity, the percentage of acids in the product, pH levels, and timing of application of the product. You need to understand your skin’s reaction when combining these two acids because it is quite tricky to find out the perfect balance.

You can use AHA and BHA on an alternate day or you can alternate products by using one acid in the morning and other during the night. Another way is to use these acids on a certain area of your face. For example, if you have combination skin you can use an AHA on dry area and BHA on the oily part of your face.

However, many experts don’t recommend using both acids on the face because at home chemical exfoliation contains a high percentage of acids that easily remove dead skin from the upper layer of your skin. Using another acid on raw and delicate skin can cause skin burning, irritation, dryness, and redness.

You need to keep in mind that everyone’s skin is different. Using chemical exfoliants together may work better for some people but not for all. When you are a beginner with the use of chemical exfoliants, it is best to use the right AHA and BHA products based on your skin concern.

Chemical exfoliants can dry your skin so support your skin with proper hydration and nourishment. Your skin becomes sensitive to UV radiation, so it is necessary to protect your skin by applying sunscreen.

Don’t forget to apply AHA and BHA on your chest and neck area to improve the appearance of these body parts.

Make sure you do not over-exfoliate your skin and read your product’s application instructions carefully. You also need to pay extra attention to your skin’s reaction and observe it while alternating between the two acids.

If you experience skin tightening after applying enough moisturizer, consider that the chemical exfoliation was too harsh for the skin. At that time, you need to stop exfoliating and focus on repairing and healing the skin by slathering on moisturizer. Give your skin some time to rest and calm down.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

AHA and BHA have similar skin benefits. Neither of them is better than one or the other. You can achieve different skincare results based on your skin type and skin concerns. AHAs are recommended for dry and aging skin treatment while BHAs are recommended for oily and clogged skin, acne treatments, and calming down the inflammation.

If you are still confused about which to choose for your skin, then you need to consult your dermatologist. They can answer your questions and recommend the specific product to try that suits your skin.
